Late Jazz @ The Maj

First Friday and Saturday nights, March - November 2018 His Majesty's Theatre, Downstairs at The Maj Buy tickets

Presented by WA Youth Jazz Orchestra

Looking for some more jazz to fill your weekends? Want to be on the ground floor before our young musicians take off and conquer the world?

Then come along to our late night sessions of Jazz @ the Maj. Short, sharp, and full of punch, WAYJO have opened up the stage to our band members to present their own ensembles, be they trios, quartets or something a little larger, to keep your night going a little longer.

For only $10*, you’ll be treated to sets curated entirely by WAYJO band members. All profits from the performances will go straight to the band members as well, so you’ll be supporting young musicians as they hone their craft.

We’ll be listing the acts performing closer to the performance dates, so keep an eye out on our webpage and Facebook for the announcements as they come to hand.

Tim Voutas Quartet (ended)

4 - 5 May 2018 @ 10PM

The Tim Voutas Quartet was formed in 2016 as a creative outlet for some of Perth’s leading young jazz musicians, based on highly improvised and interactive modern jazz.

Featuring Tim Voutas (piano), Tom Walsh (saxophone), Kane Shaw (double bass) and Ryan Daunt (drums), the Tim Voutas Quartet take jazz to new and exciting places every time they perform.

Chris Musitano Quintet (ended)

1 - 2 June 2018 @ 10PM

Chris Musitano is a local Perth trumpet player who has drawn together an impressive ensemble, featuring James Sewell (saxophone), Kane Shaw (bass), Tim Voutas (piano), and Talya Valenti (drums).

The Chris Musitano Quintet will feature a range of newly composed music and fresh arrangements of jazz standards, influenced by such artists as Christian Scott, Jacob Collier, KNOWER, and Bon Iver.

The Newhouse Collective (ended)

3 - 4 August 2018 @ 10PM

The Newhouse Collective is an octet of versatile, multi-tasking musicians that make up Tim Newhouse’s cross-genre artistic ensemble. Tim’s music can be loosely labelled as orchestral electro-jazz, drawing influence from Jaga Jazzist, GoGo Penguin, Metropole Orkest, Maria Schneider and a swathe of hybrid composers. Film soundtrack-like one second, progressive rock-like the next, the sound always keeps you guessing.

Tim is a versatile multi-woodwind instrumentalist, pianist and male vocalist; finishing fourth in the state for WACE music in 2012, he was selected to perform at Performing Arts Perspectives. He has performed and worked with artists such as the Mace Francis Orchestra, The Idea of North, Evan Sherman, James Morrison, Darcy James Argue and Ed Partyka.

The Newhouse Collective is:
Tim Newhouse - Keyboard, Melodica, Tenor Sax, Flute
Thea Woodward - Flute
Matt Smith - Trumpet
Priscilla Gardner - Voice, Violin
James Maley - Cello
James O’Brien - Piano, Keyboard
Kane Shaw - Bass
Jasper Miller - Drums, Sample Pads

5 - 6 October 2018 @ 10PM
