Join AWESOME for some hands-on, creative activities in the Perth Cultural Centre. Children are invited to create their own snowflake message, design a droplet to add to our textile river, weave a colourful circle and experiment with giant yarn looms or explore the Imagination Playground. 

Stay cosy and get creative this July school holidays!!

Imagination Playground

The Imagination Playground was designed by framed architect David Rockwell and is an interactive, transformable space that prompts very young children to manipulate their environment and create a play space of their own. With giant foam blocks at their fingertips, children have the potential to build and explore endless possibilities. The Imagination Playground addresses a broader spectrum of play needs through opportunities for fantasy and cooperative play, in addition to traditional running, jumping and climbing.

Woven Circles

Children are invited use a paper plate to weave circle shapes to test their fine motor skills. They can get creative with a variety of weaving techniques and add to a gallery of displayed plates, or take their new artwork home with them.

Snowflake Messages

Children can write a message or draw a picture for yourself or a loved one, celebrating what makes them unique. The page will then be folded up and cut into a paper snowflake which will be added to our canopy of falling snowflakes.

The River

This large kinetic textile mural of a river will invite children to create and contribute a textile raindrop. Using rain drop shapes, children will decorate their drop with recycled materials.

AWESOME Public Art Tours

Join AWESOME to discover some of the amazing public art around the Perth Cultural Centre. Learn about different types of public art and how public art enhances our City!

Dates: Monday 15th July, Wednesday 17th July and Friday 19th July

Times: 10:30am – 11:15am daily

Venue: Meet at the undercroft outside the Art Gallery of Western Australia

Ages: 5 – 12

Cost: Free, no bookings required.

Story Times

Explore a story with the State Library of Western Australia and AWESOME in a cosy Story Time Session!

Make sure you also check out the State Library of Western Australia’s regular Story Time and family programming in the Story Place too!

Fish Kid and The Lizard Ninja: Book Club with Kylie Howarth

Faster than a speeding mullet… stronger than a bull shark… it’s Fish Kid! Take a deep breath and dive into this fun-filled ocean-packed adventure with author Kylie Howarth.

Kylie will be providing special insights into writing her book and undertake a special activity with young readers!

The ticket price includes a copy of Fish Kid and the Lizard Ninja which Kylie will be happy to sign for you at the end of the session.

Visual Storytelling Workshops with Aśka

Join illustrator and science communicator Aśka in a hands-on illustration workshop covering character emotions (facial expressions and body language), representing time and sound in pictures and try your hand at telling a story using a single drawing. Materials are provided.

The All New Must Have Orange 430: Book Club with Michael Speechley

Harvey owned a heap of stuff, but could always use more. The ORANGE 430 was the latest and the greatest. Harvey wasn't sure what it did, but he had to have it!

Join author/illustrator Michael Speechley to explore his cheeky picture book for anyone who’s bought a thingy or whatsit . . . and doesn't quite know why. Michael will explore our

obsession with stuff through this interactive session! Best of all, the ticket price includes a copy of The All New Must Have Orange 430 which Michael can sign for you at the end of the event.
